Seth Green breaks down potential Oz storyline in Hulu’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot

While Green did not confirm that he was reappearing as Oz in Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, he did see the Dark horse comics follow-up to the OG series as a great jumping off point

If you're a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan, chances are you've at least considered subscribing to star Charisma Carpenter's Patreon, The Bitch is Back. It's a place for great conversation and some inside info from the folks that made the show, but if you'll recall, it's also the place where James Marsters might've slipped up and admitted he was coming back for the reboot. With that little tidbit in mind, we were listening pretty closely for any New Sunnydale hints in the latest episode of TBiB, with guest Seth Green, AKA Sunnydale's Oz.

We'll be honest with you upfront - we did not get a confirmation of Oz's return (even a mistaken one), but we did hear how Green could see his character progressing in a new series. Or rather, how Oz has already progressed in the form of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics from Dark Horse.

The conversation began with a chat about, surprisingly, Stan Lee. Lee was apparently one of Green's heroes in both his storytelling career and lifestyle, and this was a fact that Carpenter, who played Sunnydale High's HBiC Cordelia, loved to hear about her co-star.

“I love that you are so obsessed," said Caprenter, "I love that you were so obsessed with pop culture. I love that you're so deep into it, the imagination the creativity all that you nurture those relationships."

And speaking of being in tune with pop culture...

"I got to know," Carpenter said, "Is there a world where Oz could be in the reboot? Or, where do you see Oz? [...] If Oz had a storyline in the revival what would that be?"

Maybe Green was putting on an incredible poker face at this point, but he gave no sign of knowing about Oz in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer update, tentatively titled New Sunnydale. Like we said, though, it seemed Green wanted to talk about his character in more of a print capacity.

"If they [the New Sunnydale writers] pick up any of the continuity that came from the comics," said Green, "Which I thought was pretty cool, Oz tempered all of his strengths and focus to become a perfectly zen weapon. Then he's just, like, training Slayers and then showing up with some sage advice when anybody needs it. Training Slayers, chaining himself to the wall. I'm sure there's something there that are more interesting writer could posit for him."

But if there's one thing that Green wants to be absolutely clear on, hypotheticals aside, it's that whatever's next for werewolf Oz is out of his hands.

"I don't have any ideas for that character," Green concluded, "I've left him well in the hands of the creators and they've always served me really well."

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale is slated to premiere on Hulu sometime in 2026.
