Just days after it was reported that Mike Flanagan might have found the series’ star in former Chucky actor Summer H. Howell, Prime Video has officially announced that it will reboot Stephen King’s classic high school horror Carrie as an eight-episode miniseries.
The new series be entirely written by Flanagan, who will also act as the series showrunner, executive producer, and director on “select” episodes, according to the streamer. Trevor Macy, who’s worked with Flanagan on projects including The Haunting of Hill House, Doctor Sleep, Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher, will also be on board the series as executive producer.
Prime Video describes the series as “a bold and timely reimagining of the story of misfit high-schooler Carrie White, who has spent her life in seclusion with her domineering mother. After her father’s sudden and untimely death, Carrie finds herself contending with the alien landscape of public high school, a bullying scandal that shatters her community and the emergence of mysterious telekinetic powers.”
The series will be the fourth time King’s 1974 novel has been adapted for the screen; in addition to Brian De Palma’s iconic 1976 movie starring Sissy Spacek and John Travolta, there have been movies in 2002 (written by Hannibal’s Bryan Fuller) and 2013.
In a statement, Amazon MGM’s head of television Vernon Sanders said, “Carrie is an iconic story that has withstood the test of time with continued cultural relevance. With Mike Flanagan at the helm and the accomplished team assembled including executive producer Trevor Macy this provocative series is sure to captivate our global customers.”
The show will continue Flanagan’s longstanding association with Stephen King, which has so far included 2017’s Gerald’s Game, 2019’s Doctor Sleep, and this year’s upcoming The Life of Chuck; additionally, he’s working on an adaptation of The Dark Tower series. In 2024, Flanagan talked to Popverse's Ashley V. Robinson about working with the acclaimed author: “He approves everything; his approvals are critical. But once it's time to make the movie, it's very important to him that he backs up and says, 'The movie is yours, the book is mine.'"
No release date has been announced for Prime Video’s Carrie.
