The Critical Role cast is changing how they play the game for Campaign 4

Critical Role Campaign 4 will feature a West Marches style campaign

The Critical Role gang is trying something new for their latest campaign.

Critical Role Campaign 4 features a cast of 13 players, and in order to keep the focus on a large group, the gameplay is a bit different from previous campaigns.

“We were kind of following what is referred to as a West Marches campaign,” Marisha Ray said during a Critical Role spotlight panel at New York Comic Con 2025. “If you’re not familiar with the format, it’s basically disparate branching stories that all kind of connect to each other in other ways.”

She continued, “So, the first four episodes, you’re going to see all of us kind of rotating in and out of the table, but then soon you’re going to launch off and follow one group for a little bit, and then we’ll bounce around to the other groups. It’s going to be really exciting to see how the actions of one group will inevitably affect another.”

I dig this format, because it reminds me of the way movies and television shows juggle multiple subplots with a large cast of characters. Plus, it means playing with the format, which keeps a franchise from going stale.

Critical Role Campaign 4 is currently running with new episodes every Thursday.
