Critical Role’s Liam O’Brien loves playing as Orym, because there are lots of fun things you could do with a “short king”

Critical Role’s Liam O’Brien says it’s fun to play a “short king” like Orym because you can fun between enemies legs during a fight

One of the best parts about playing tabletop games is the way your characters surprise you. It’s fun to get to know your character and discover new things about them on your campaign. Liam O’Brien played as a halfling fighter named Orym during Critical Role Campaign 3, and he quickly discovered just how much fun you could have with a short fighter.

“I love my short king, he fits everywhere,” Liam O’Brien says during a Critical Role spotlight panel at New York Comic Con 2023. “I’ve been waiting to play this little guy for so long, and I love sort of subverting the stereotypical hero ideas. I liked making a rogue who wore his heart on his sleeve. I like making a wizard who’s a coward instead of a power fantasy. And I loved making a fighter who runs under everyone’s legs constantly and stabs you with a letter opener.”

“He’s got nothing. He doesn’t have magic. Everyone around him has either got a melting face, or purple veins in their arms, or is a thousand-year-old robot, and I just do a lot of squats and crunches.”

Whether you're dodging enemy fire or just trying to reach the top shelf in the tavern, remember that size isn't everything. Orym proves that a pint-sized powerhouse can steal the show, one stealthy squat at a time. After all, in a party full of mystical misfits, sometimes the real magic is being the short king who keeps everyone on their toes.
