Critical Role cast worried that animators would be too stressed by how many lands get explored by The Mighty Nein

Critical Role’s Travis Willingham says The Mighty Nein will explore lots of new and exciting places

If you thought The Legend of Vox Machina took you to strange and interesting places, wait until you see The Mighty Nein. The next Critical Role animated television series is set 20 years after the events of Vox Machina, and according to the cast, there will be lots of new places to explore – even if it means giving the animators headaches.

“I think one of the lessons we learned on Vox Machina, anytime you go to a new location it requires a whole slew of new assets,” Travis Willingham says during a Critical Role spotlight panel at New York Comic Con. “We didn’t go a ton of places in season one of Vox Machina, but in Mighty Nein, y’all, we’re going all over Alexandria. Just everywhere.”

“We gave [the animators] a good heads up, but we’re on the ocean, we’re in the mountains, we’re in the land, we’re in the dynasty, we’re in the empire, and that was some of the most exhilarating stuff to help the teams design and build on. Anytime we have a chance to throw things at our amazing partners at Titmouse Animation, they just look at us and go, ‘bet.’”

The Mighty Nein premieres November 19, 2025 on Prime Video.
