Never ask Doctor Who star David Tennant who his favorite Doctor or Companion is - if he answered, he would get "in trouble"

"Not a chance," David Tennant told fans at his panel at MCM Comic Con 2025, showing that he needs to be diplomatic about playing favorites with his co-stars.

Everyone deserves secrets, even high-profile actors like David Tennant. As much as fans would love to know everything that goes on in the Doctor Who actor’s head, some things are better left to him. So, no matter how much you ask him, David Tennant isn’t going to tell you his favorite Doctors, Companions, or villains from the show – simply so he doesn’t upset anyone.

David Tennant was forced to give a very diplomatic answer to a question from a fan at MCM Comic Con 2025. It wasn’t because of an NDA or any legal reasons – he just didn’t want to be seen as playing favorites among his Doctor Who co-stars. When asked which Doctor, Companion, or villain from Doctor Who he would like to see in an episode, Tennant flat-out refused to answer.

“There is absolutely no way you’re going to get me to name favorite Doctors or Companions,” he says, giving a pretty definite refusal. “Not a chance. How much trouble would I get in? It will be taken as a favorite and I will be in trouble. I cannot express a preference even in whimsy. I don’t even know how to form a sentence without getting myself in trouble, so I’m going to say that I cannot answer that.”

Considering that David Tennant recently made his return to Doctor Who in 2024 – and his Doctor is currently off doing his own thing through space and time – it makes sense that he would want to keep tight-lipped on who he would want to work with in the future. You never know whose good side he’ll have to be on.
