Superman & Lois would have debated leaving Smallville after their kids left for college, but the show was cancelled, says star Tyler Hoechlin
Tyler Hoechlin wanted to see the CW's Superman & Lois explore empty nest syndrome after Jonathan and Jordan left their parents for college

Fighting monsters and aliens is one thing. Navigating empty nest syndrome is something else.
Superman & Lois ended its four season run on December 2, 2024, and while series star Tyler Hoechlin has no regrets about the cancellation, he does wish the show had gotten around to Jonathan and Jordan’s college years. According to Hoechlin, this would’ve seen Lois and Clark contemplate leaving Smallville as they dealt with empty nest syndrome.
“That was mine. I don’t know about the mythos necessarily, but I really would’ve liked to have seen Lois and Clark dealing with the boys going off to school, and going, ‘So, do we go back to Metropolis, or do we stay here,”’ Hoechlin says during a panel at GalaxyCon Raleigh 2025. “Figuring out that next stage of life for them, because I remember seeing my parents go through it, and other parents go through it, when everyone is finally out of the house, and the whole empty nest thing. I thought that would’ve been really cool from the family drama perspective.”
That could’ve been an interesting storyline. Jonathan and Jordan trying to carve out their independence would be more difficult since Clark has super-hearing and telescopic vision, which means he would be able to check on them anytime he wanted. Not to mention his superspeed.
Superman & Lois always did a good job exploring complicated family dynamics. It’s a shame they never got to tackle this storyline, because I have no doubt the cast would’ve knocked it out of the park.
