The Flash star Grant Gustin admits the show had run out of ideas after nine seasons

Grant Gustin believes The Flash hit most of us highs early, and that the show had run out of ideas by the end of its nine season run

The Flash fought a giant gorilla, rewrote the timeline, and crossed over with some of DC’s most iconic heroes.

And that was just the first season.

The Flash ran for nine seasons on the CW from 2014 through 2023 and made a lot of big swings along the way. In fact, series star Grant Gustin believes that they did so much of what they wanted to do that by the end of the series they had run out of ideas.

“We did so many,” Grant Gustin says during a panel at Fan Expo Denver 2025. “I thought it was a pipe dream to get to interact with Superman, and then we did that. That was cool. I guess early in season one we met Grodd and King Shark. That felt like something that was going to be too big for us to do as well. I was surprised that we did that and did it pretty well I thought considering the constraints that you’re under with time and money on TV. We did so much. Nine seasons. We were kind of out of ideas by the time we were done.”

The Flash is available to stream on Netflix.
