DC Studios’ Lanterns TV series will have a True Detective season one vibe, at least that's what Jim Lee is telling people

Green Lantern writer Steve Englehart says DC Comics publisher Jim Lee told him HBO Max’s Lanterns will be “very dark and weird,” much like True Detective season one

We met Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner in Superman. Now it’s time to meet more of the Green Lantern Corps.

Lanterns is an upcoming HBO Max series that will introduce Hal Jordan and John Stewart to James Gunn’s new DC Universe. Gunn celebrated the start of the show’s production by releasing an image of Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Hal Jordan and John Stewart.

As of this writing, that’s all we have. There have been no trailers, promotional images, or even leaked set photos. The series, which premieres in 2026, is largely an enigma.

However, DC Comics publisher Jim Lee has dropped some hints about what we might expect in terms of vibes. Longtime Green Lantern writer Steve Englehart had a conversation with Lee about the series, and he says Lee was very excited about what he’s seen.

“I was told that it’s going to be a lot like the first season of True Detective. Very dark and weird. That is what I’ve been told by Jim Lee, and that’s all I know,” Engelhart tells Popverse.

While this is secondhand information, both sources are reliable, so this bodes well for Lanterns. I’m especially interested in the “dark and weird” angle.

Lanterns premieres on HBO Max in 2026.
