Superman spinoff shows DC Studios boss James Gunn’s Peacemaker wasn't a one-off fluke

One of the most enjoyable aspects of James Gunn's Superman film was the litany of lovable side characters. If you had told me a year ago that future me would regularly quote a line said by Steve Lombard in everyday life ("Why don't I have a seat?!"), I would have given you side eye on par with Mister Terrific. While we got a taste of who's who at The Daily Planet, it looks like we're set to take a deeper dive into Metropolis's journalism scene through a newly announced Jimmy Olsen show from DC Studios.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, the Jimmy Olsen show will be written, executive produced, and showrun by Dan Perrault and Tony Yacendo from American Vandal. The show was described as following Olsen and other Daily Planet staff as they "tackle cases involving superpowered villains." Additionally, the iconic Flash villain, Gorilla Grodd, is expected to be "in the spotlight for the season."
The Jimmy Olsen show follows a familiar pattern set by James Gunn, who will be executive producing the show with DC Studios co-head, Peter Safran. After writing and directing The Suicide Squad, Gunn created the Peacemaker spinoff show starring John Cena. Like Superman, The Suicide Squad featured a colorful cast of characters. And like Peacemaker, Jimmy Olsen is a character you wouldn't ordinarily consider to be a marquee hero. It's an MO that's paid off well for Gunn and DC Studios: both seasons of Peacemaker have been received warmly by both critics and fans alike.
If the Jimmy Olsen show can present a cohesive but distinctive creative voice like Peacemaker, I don't see why it wouldn't be another win for DC Studios.
