There have been many Doctors and companions, and each one has brought something different to the franchise. For Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper, they hope their legacy on Doctor Who is one of love.
That and standing up to fascism.
“[The Doctor’s] optimism, I think and his refusal to be cowed by dictators and people like that,” Eccleston says during a panel at Florida Supercon. “He’s forever holding up a mirror to human beings and saying this is the worst of you and this is the best of you. Please choose the best. Don’t be stupid apes.”
“I never think about legacy at all,” Billie Piper says. “I only think about my gratitude for the connection with the character of Rose. And actually, I’m not naturally sci-fi minded, and what I really love about Rose is that you can really connect with the sci-fi through humanity, and even domesticity, and her relationship with her mom, and all of those things have been steeped in reality, which I think opens up the concept of sci-fi, and the two things marry really well. So yeah, I guess I’m just grateful that people can connect to that part of their personality.”
“Like Billie, you don’t think about legacy, you just think I hope they believe me,” Eccleston adds. “I hope they believed I was that character. That’s every job you do; how can I convince everybody, including myself, that I’m that character? But it’s about love, isn’t it? Doctor Who is all about love, and I get a lot of love from it now. Mostly from 26-year-old people, who were five, who just eternally come up to me and make me feel very old.”
