This year has been a rough one for Doctor Who fans. At the end of the previous season, Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor regenerated into Billie Piper. Since then, the 2026 Christmas special was cancelled, and the show has been put to tender, meaning that the BBC is looking for someone to help cover the rising costs of producing Doctor Who. Long-time Doctor Who producer Jane Tranter says that this period of inactivity could be exactly what the series needs to come back stronger.

Jane Tranter co-founded Bad Wolf alongside Russell T Davies and has been attached to the Doctor Who series in various ways since the New Who era began. While Bad Wolf seem to no longer be involved in the future of Doctor Who, she still has plenty of thoughts about where the series is going. “We started Doctor Who – Russell T Davies, Julie Gardner and myself – back in 2005 and we finished this current era off, and it felt like it was a kind of noble and good bookending,” she explained during a recent appearance on BBC Radio Wales. “And there will be a new era to come, and who knows what will happen and who knows who will be part of that?”

Tranter did offer a bit of a bright spot for fans, though, by saying that more Doctor Who is almost assuredly on the way. “Doctor Who will continue in some way, but every show needs a pause after it’s been going for that length of time, and Doctor Who will take its course and will regenerate in whatever form. And it will rise and be wonderful, and I am absolutely sure it will be Wales-Based.”

That leaves us with more questions than answers, to be honest. Billie Piper claims that, despite what happened in that last episode, she’s not playing the new Doctor. Right now, no one knows what the future of Doctor Who holds. Other, perhaps, than the Doctor themselves.
