Hugh Bonneville teases us with the most exciting Downton Abbey spin-off possible as The Grand Finale finally hits cinemas

Downton Abbey in space is the coolest idea we've ever heard and we'll be working on the fanfic right now.

With a name like Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, you’d think that would be the end of the show. However, you never really know what could happen, especially if Downton Abbey manages to make a big splash at the box office. And, as Hugh Bonneville has pointed out, there are no limits to potential Downton Abbey spin-offs. Nor should we limit our imagination to merely terrestrial stories.

During an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Hugh Bonneville explained that there was always a chance, however slim, that we’ll get more from Downton Abbey in the future. “You know, all these franchises now seem to have spin-offs in some way or other. And while I think our chapter at the Castle of, Highclere Castle of Downton Abbey itself, is now over, I mean, you’ve noticed there’s a big tower. I’m pretty convinced there’s a rocket in there, and I think there could be… I think there could be a spin-off in space. Lord Grantham on Mars or something like that.”

Okay, so this is clearly a jokey way to brush off the obvious question of whether Downton Abbey is really over, but we notice that Bonneville didn’t say no, exactly. Shows like Bridgerton have certainly proved that there is a demand for period dramas, so we wouldn’t put it past them to revisit the Downton Abbey setting, even if it isn’t at Downton Abbey itself.

Though we will admit that a Downton Abbey spin-off in space would be really rad, and we’re going to go write that fan fiction right now.
