In the vein of her X-Men character, Famke Janssen has designed some of her costumes in Netflix’s Amsterdam Empire - and wants to do more

Tweaking her own wardrobe is "a hobby that's for sure taking up a ton of my time," says X-Men and Amsterdam Empire actress Famke Janssen

If you're an X-Men comic book fan, chances are you have strong opinions about what their best outfits are. For me, I'm partial to their look from Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's New X-Men because I think Jean's striped turtleneck is iconic (and looks comfortable). And in the same vein as her X-Men character, Jean Grey, actress Famke Janssen also has an eye for fashion.

In her upcoming Netflix show, Amsterdam Empire, Janssen was an executive producer and helped design the costumes for her character, Betty. It’s a journey that piggybacks off of one of Janssen’s most treasured hobbies: fashion design. Speaking to our video producer, Ashley Victoria Robinson, Janssen said, "So right now it's a hobby that's for sure taking up a ton of my time... a large part of my own wardrobe is, I tweak it... I take existing clothes, I add things, badges, whatever it is. I make them my own. If that could ever turn into a fashion thing, that would be great.”

Amsterdam Empire marks Janssen’s first time acting in her native language of Dutch. The show is set in, you guessed it, Amsterdam, as Janssen’s character, Betty, uncovers her husband’s affair. To get back at him, Betty vies for control of his entire business empire.

Janssen said that she hopes Amsterdam Empire won’t be the end of the road for her costume design journey. "I love it as a hobby, it's just amazing, so I do hope that I get to do something with it in the future."
