Katey Sagal credits Futurama fans for keeping the show going all these years: “It’s a completely fan-based show”

At C2E2 2025, Katey Sagal, who voices Leela on Futurama, had kind things to say about Futurama fans

Katey Sagal has been playing the iconic one-eyed alien, Leela, on Futurama for quite some time now. The show first hit the airwaves on Fox in 1999, before the network pulled the plug on it in 2003. Then, it was revived by Comedy Central in 2008, where it ran until 2013. Now, Hulu has been producing new episodes of the show since 2023. It's been quite a run.

At C2E2 this year, our video producer, Ashley Victoria Robinson, sat down with Katey Sagal as part of our Popversations interview series. When asked about whether or not she expects to be playing Leela until the cows come home, Sagal said, "The way things have gone, I would say yes. It's a completely fan-based show. So it's because of the fans that we can keep coming back over and over again, on different networks. So far, so good on Hulu, so I think we'll keep going."

Futurama has continued to thrive because it has built up an audience of younger people, some of whom weren't even alive when the show premiered on Fox back in 1999. The show has benefited from reruns that aired on Adult Swim in the mid-2000s, as well as syndication beginning in 2011. In short, it never hurts for a show to be more accessible for people to watch old episodes of.
