How Hazbin Hotel's Lucifer Morningstar changed from its original "very clean" plans to the vulgar bon vivant we love
For Hazbin Hotel creator Vivienne Medrano, watching actor Jeremy Jordan transform Lucifer Morningstar has been a delight

In making films and television shows, there lies a transformative element between the script as it exists on the page, and the story that's brought to life by the actors, crew members, and more. For instance, did the writers of The Dark Knight Rises know that Tom Hardy was going to read every one of his lines as Bane like... that? To be perfectly honest with you, I have no idea. But it's something I think about a lot.
But for Hazbin Hotel creator Vivienne Medrano, who has gotten the chance to work with some of the most iconic voices from Broadway and beyond (I mean, Keith David! Keith David!), the acting and creative abilities of her cast have impacted the journeys that specific characters have gone on. To Indiewire, Medrano dished on the experience of watching Jeremy Jordan transform the character of Lucifer into the nuanced fan-favorite guy you see onscreen.
"He was always meant to be this kind of goofy dad who was a big dreamer and like ‘The Greatest Showman’ PT Barnum. But that could have gone so many different ways. I originally envisioned somebody for the role who was very silly, had comedy music at the forefront, very zany, but also very clean," Medrano began.
"He has now become my favorite character, due partially to Jeremy Jordan’s incredible characterization of him. Like, he just came in, and when he is in that booth, he is that character. I have no idea how he can come up with such fun line reads and such character-filled moments. It’s really amazing. So now we know how he performs Lucifer, I’m able to write him much more naturally, knowing the characterization that he has now. I really do think the cast helps dictate a lot of how we’re writing these characters, and I really love that."
Currently, season 3 of Hazbin Hotel has been completed, with composer Sam Haft hinting that he has knowledge of what's to come in the still-unannounced season 5 of the show. Who doesn't love a bit of speculation? You can stream seasons 1 and 2 of Hazbin Hotel on Prime Video now.
