Hazbin Hotel songwriter on what makes a song a hit with fans: "I should've bet on daddy issues a little bit more"

For Sam Haft, he didn't bet that his "daddy issues" would fuel the love for a particular song he wrote for Hazbin Hotel

There's nothing that brings together a fandom more than a soundtrack. (Just play 'Hooked On A Feeling' in the vicinity of some Guardians of the Galaxy fans and see what happens.) It's certainly the case for Prime Video's animated hit Hazbin Hotel, with its litany of songs written by the team of Sam Haft and Andrew Underberg.

Of course, part of the experience of being one of the show's composers is seeing which songs fans gravitate towards most. And as the show has progressed, Haft has been surprised by the reception of more personal songs like Sera's Confession. "My predictions have been wildly wrong," Haft said to That Hashtag Show about the songs that have taken off in the Hazbin Hotel fandom.

"I put Sera's Confession, which is at the moment the third most popular song [amongst fans], I put it in the bottom half of the songs. I did not expect all of that religious trauma to come out and for people to [relate to it]. But that's always the mistake I make," he revealed. "Because in season 1, I did the same thing with More Than Anything. I predicted it would be in the bottom half of the songs, because I didn't bet on daddy issues. Which I should've, because if I wrote a song like that, I've got [daddy issues]. I should've bet on daddy issues a little bit more."

Perhaps, as Hazbin Hotel continues on in the future, Haft will become better at predicting the songs that will connect most with fans. Or perhaps fans will continue to surprise him! What's better than mixing things up, after all?

Hazbin Hotel is streaming on Prime Video.
