You can’t keep a good clown down.
Although he was defeated at the end of It: Chapter Two, Pennywise will be returning for an HBO prequel series titled It: Welcome to Derry. The series will be set decades before the carnivorous clown met the Losers Club, which means he’ll have a new generation of children to terrorize. When producers Andy and Barbara Muschietti began developing the series, one of the first things they did was consult with Stephen King, the author of the original book. Luckily for them, King loved it.
“With this idea, we went to the great Stephen King, who loved the idea and supported us. It was early 2020, we walked to Warner, they bought it in the room. And here we are,” Barbara Muschietti says during a panel at New York Comic Con.
Andy Muschietti goes on to say that the show uses the Mike Hanlon interludes from King’s original book as the basis for their story.
“[Mike Hanlon] wrote all this,” Andy Muschietti says. "The interludes are a document that is a product of his investigation, which is a very fragmented document where he compiles all the experiences of people and the past, and where he tries to basically figure out what it is. But it’s inconclusive. It’s all informing somehow what It is, but we are left with more questions than answers.”
It: Welcome to Derry airs Sundays this fall on HBO.
