Helluva Boss finds new life on Amazon Prime — and Brandon Rogers says it’s restored his faith in mainstream media
Helluva Boss lead Brandon Rogers on moving to Prime Video alongside Hazbin Hotel: "restored my faith in mainstream media"

Will the raunchy, demonic animated comedy Helluva Boss be better now that it’s streaming on Amazon Prime? That’s ultimately for the fans to decide once new episodes are available, but there are things even now that point to ‘yes.’ For example, the show’s place on the streamer means it’s free of its former YouTube community guidelines, meaning it can swear and bleed and do all sorts of unnameable things without those pesky censors in the way. And then there’s the fact that, now that it’s on the same streamer as sister show Hazbin Hotel, the possibility of a crossover has never been closer to reality.
But for series lead and cowriter Brandon Rogers, who does the voice of titular Helluva Boss Blitzo (the O is silent), there was more to the move to Prime than a couple f-bombs and cross-continuity easter eggs. And when we got the chance to sit down with the YouTube comedian recently, we got to hear all of what it entailed.
"[The move to Prime] restored my faith in mainstream media," explained Rogers, "I've always thought that Hazbin was, like, the rebel. You know - 'I'm alternative and I'll never be mainstream.' And then it went mainstream! That makes me feel like, okay, good art can still go big. I'm just so proud of it. I'm so proud of Viv [Vivienne Medrano, series creator] and everyone on board."
As you might imagine, that feeling of accomplishment is something that's impossible - or at least unhealthy - to keep bottled up, and as Rogers explained, he couldn't help but share it with the people he loved most when he got word of the move.
"When I got the news," Rogers told us, "I think the first thing that I did was call my parents. I said something like, ‘This time next year, I'm going to have a show on Prime that I'm the title character of.' I've never been more proud to tell my parents, to say those words to your mom and dad.
"You know, I don't expect my family to be on YouTube all the time," he continued, "So a lot of my work goes unseen by a lot of my family. But they watch things like Netflix, Hulu, and Prime. It made me feel like my family can enjoy my work on a more frequent level, and they do. They watch it now that it's on Prime. They are finally watching Helluva Boss, and they're getting what I've been doing in LA all these years."
Naturally, we had to know if there were any notable reactions that Rogers - who also plays Hazbin Hotel's truly horrible news anchor, Katie Killjoy - got from his family, now that they were more aware of his work.
"There are people in my family that I haven't really connected with emotionally that I'm connecting with through Blitzo," Rogers shared. "People in my family are crying because of things that Blitzo goes through, and these are people that I've never really felt super close with at all. Yet through this show, I feel like they immensely understand a side of my soul that I express through the writing."
"That's really cool," he concluded, "Because a lot of my own problems go through Blitzo. I write what I know and so does Viv. And so, you know, it does feel like the world and our family are kind of understanding us for our flaws, and accepting us through the work that we make. I know with my family, I feel a lot closer to them because of Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel."
