House of the Dragon's Gayle Rankin confirms season 3 will explain who Alys Rivers is

Alys Rivers, who barely appears in George R.R. Martin's Fire and Blood, has been one of the biggest mysteries of HBO's House of the Dragon - but that will change in season 3

If you want to know more about a Game of Thrones character, you usually turn to the pages of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, or one of its spinoffs. For fans interested in House of the Dragon's Alys Rivers, though, that's not such an easy task. Though the character is briefly mentioned in Martin’s Fire and Blood, the version played by Gayle Rankin in the series appears very different, and questions regarding her true identity and past have swirled in the fandom ever since her introduction in season 2.

But according to Rankin herself, answers are on their way in House of the Dragon season 3.

Rankin recently sat down for an interview with ScreenRant, published June 10. During the discussion, the GLOW star revealed that, though the origins and intentions of her character are murky on-screen, she had already determined a lot of the healer's truths off-set.

"It was so imperative for me to try to make sense, personal sense, of who she is," Rankin said, "Where she's come from. And that's been really exciting to work with Ryan [Condal, showrunner] and the entire writing team on. And in season 2 it wasn't exactly explicit, but things will develop, things will be exposed."

"There isn't really backstory in the book about her really," she continued, "So it was things that we discussed and it was to help me get into character for sure. I need to have something really grounding and clear for myself. So that totally exists. It's just like for this moment, it's not totally out in the open."

We look forward to when those things are out in the open, Gayle. Just don't die right after we learn who your character is, OK? Why do you look worried?

All will be revealed when House of the Dragon season 3 heads to HBO Max June 21.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 may have wrapped on HBO Max, but with House of the Dragon season 3 coming just around the corner, it's always a great time to read up on all things Game of Thrones. Fortunately, Popverse has everything you need to journey through the George R.R. Martin-created Westeros, including:

Plus much more coming as it gets announced!

Grant DeArmitt: Grant DeArmitt (he/him) likes horror, comics, and the unholy union of the two. In the past, and despite their better judgment, he has written for Nightmare on Film Street and Newsarama. He lives in Brooklyn with his partner, Kingsley, and corgi, Legs.
