WWE’s Nature Boy Ric Flair was not only the a “limousine-riding, jet-flying, kiss-stealing, wheeling-dealing son of a gun,” but also a figure on the Mount Rushmore of professional wrestling, widely considered one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time. He long held the WWE record of 16 championships, which John Cena recently passed by defeating Cody Rhodes and winning his 17th title at WrestleMania last year — something that Cena doesn’t take lightly.
Cena so believes in respect that he's made it part of his core "hustle, loyalty, respect" slogan, so it was only natural for him to pay respect to Ric Flair and talk to him when he surpassed his record. As he told fans at Fan Expo Chicago 2025, "Ric sent me a text and called me on the phone… I saw him in person a few days after. When it comes to that, he is the level of class."
An audience member had asked Flair at another con if he had any stories about partying with Cena and replied he couldn't share the stories. Cena told the Fan Expo Chicago crowd that he did have a story about hanging out with the notoriously hard-partying Flair.
“There is this one time,” he said. “We were on a two-week tour overseas in the UK. It's tradition we enjoy all the UK has to offer. So Ric Flair and I went to the Ritz Hotel at about 4 p.m. and sat down for high tea. We had tea and sandwiches. That's the story.” The confession elicited a lot of laughter from a crowd likely expecting something a little more raucous.
Cena currently appears in the second season of Peacemaker, streaming on HBO Max.
