Texas oil companies were scared at first of Billy Bob Thornton's Landman, but co-creator says they're now "lining up": Here's why

Christian Wallace had a hard time getting resources for Landman because Texan companies were apprehensive about Hollywood

Landman isn’t like other television shows. The Paramount+ drama has aimed to have as little of Hollywood as possible in its production. It’s a Texas show with a Texan crew, starring a Texan cast.

However, it was initially hard to get cooperation from local Texan companies, who were distrustful of Hollywood productions. “Last year I would make calls to some oil field companies and stuff and be like, ‘Hey, we’re doing this thing,’’ showrunner Christian Wallace says during a panel at ATX TV Festival.

It was a hard sell, but once they realized the show was a celebration of Texas made by Texans, they were onboard.

“They’re like, ‘I don’t know. You’re from Hollywood.’ And I’m like, ‘No, you don’t get it. These are Texans making this show about Texas.’ And now it’s like they’re calling me up. ‘Hey man. Can we get in that show? I mean, we’ll send you some hats.’ They’re lining up now. It’s cool now that people get what we’re doing and hopefully we don’t get run off as much.”

Landman is currently streaming on Paramount+.
