Critical Role & Prime Video reveal The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 release date, reveal the first image of Vecna... er, The Whispered One
Critical Role's The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 premieres this summer, and it's bringing with it a popular villain from Campaign 1. What's that character's name? Er, we don't want to get the lawyers involved

The hotly-anticipated release date for Critical Role's The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 is finally here, but that wasn't the only tidbit of news that we got from Exandria today. In their social media post revealing The Legend of Vox Machina's season 4 release date, Prime Video also teased the first image of an upcoming villain so terrifying that we can't even refer to him by his real name.
Or is that actually just a licensing issue? Let's get into it.
What is Critical Role's The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 release date?
The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 premieres June 3, 2026. Even beyond that, Prime Video and Titmouse, the animation studio behind The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein, have revealed that this season will follow "a three episode weekly rollout," similar to The Legend of Vox Machina season 3. Also like season 3 (and seasons 1 and 2, respectively), this season will be comprised of 12 half-hour episodes,
But that's just all the technical stuff. What I'm sure Vox Machina fans are really curious about, especially if they haven't watched Critical Role's Campaign 1 actual play, is...
Who is in Critical Role's The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 teaser?
At the tail end of the social media teaser for The Legend of Vox Machina's season 4 release date, viewers catch a glimpse of a purple-clad skeleton creature with all the evil vibes of a Sauron or Emperor Palpatine. So just who is this mysterious character? Well, at the end of The Legend of Vox Machina season 3, you may remember that some shady cultists had gathered together to summon something called The Whispered One, but what you might not know is that this character is known to TTRPG fans by a different name:
Vecna.
Hold on, you might say - Vecna from Stranger Things is in The Legend of Vox Machina?? Well, no, although the name does come from the same place. As we explained after the Critical Role panel at SDCC 2025, Vecna is the name of a popular Dungeons & Dragons villain, who worked his way into Critical Role Campaign 1. However, because the name "Vecna" is IP that belongs to D&D publisher Wizards of the Coast, the character is referred to as The Whispered One in all official CR media, including, it seems their animated adaptations.
The Legend of Vox Machina premieres on Prime Video June 3.

With two animated series on Prime Video, Campaign 4 in full swing, and so much more Exandrian lore to come, Critical Role is showing no signs of slowing down. That's why the adventuring party at Popverse are here to bring you everything we can from those nerdy-ass voice actors & Bo., including:
- How to watch Critical Role in order
- Travis Willingham on the differences between The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein
- Taliesin Jaffe on playing Mollymauk Tealeaf for Campaign 2 vs. playing him for Prime Video
- Matt Mercer's homebrew warrior class (created originally for Vin Diesel)
...and much, much more. Roll initiative, player. Magic awaits.
