Three years after its conclusion, Manifest is flying back onto screens with an all-new spinoff on Netflix that reunites the original creative team behind the cult NBC mystery — and promises to expand the lore of the original in unexpected new ways.

Netflix has announced that Jeff Rake (creator of the original series) will re-team with writers and executive producers Margaret Easley and Laura Putney for Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery, a new series spinning out of the original story about passengers on Montego Air Flight 828. Notably, this was announced on August 28, or 8/28 for those following the U.S. format for dates.

The official description of the new series runs, “When a mysterious plane crash-lands in Denver, the passengers emerge with no memory of who they are, where they came from, or why they’re here. A young social worker and a novice Homeland Security agent team up with the new arrivals in an attempt to stop a humanity-ending catastrophe, discovering along the way that they are all part of the very puzzle they’re trying to solve.”

“When the idea for Manifest first crash-landed in my head, I never imagined where it would lead. What started as a wild concept became something much bigger - a story that connected with millions of people around the globe. And thanks to Netflix, we were able to finish the journey and give those fans the ending they deserved. But the world of Manifest has more stories to tell,” Rake said in a statement accompanying the announcement.

The original Manifest launched on NBC in 2018, running for three seasons before being cancelled in 2021. Despite reasonably low ratings on broadcast television, the show found its audience when added to Netflix, with new viewers worldwide binging the show and pushing it into the Netflix Top 10 - and, in fact, to eventually break the platform’s record for overall viewership within months of appearing on the platform. Netflix would then renew the show for a fourth and final season, which dropping in two parts on November 2022 and June 2023, spending nine weeks on the platform’s Global Top 10 list.

What's interesting about Rake's comment that "the world of Manifest has more stories to tell" is that, before NBC cancelled the show, he'd talked about a six season plan for the series. Instead, it only made it to four seasons. Could some of the abandoned revelations from the original series make it into the new show? Stranger things have happened. (No, that's not an intentional callback to Netflix's homegrown big supernatural hit.)

No release date nor cast for Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery has been announced, but fans can rest assured that, like flight 828, more information will appear at some unexpected point in the future. For now, the original Manifest remains on Netflix to catch up on.
