Daredevil actor Charlie Cox couldn’t attend law school after Marvel cast him, so the next best thing? Law podcasts & audiobooks
Charlie Cox prepared for his role as Marvel’s Daredevil by listening to lawyer podcasts

Law school takes three years to complete and could set you back as far as $250,000. It would be unreasonable to ask any actor to go through that.
Luckily there’s a much cheaper and less time-consuming alternative.
When Charlie Cox was cast as Matt Murdock for Marvel’s Daredevil, he wanted to bring himself up to speed on legal lingo, and since law school wasn’t on the table, the actor listened to law podcasts.
“I don’t know anything about being a lawyer,” Cox says during a panel at GalaxyCon New Orleans 2025. “I had to listen to a ton of bluff your way into being a lawyer type books. Listening to podcasts about trying to pick up basic terminology.”
In addition to brushing up on legal matters, Cox also prepared his body for the role.
“It’s been such an amazing role for an actor to play, because for this particular character, there’s so many things that I had to learn. Obviously, I’m not American, so I have to do an American accent. I had never done any martial arts training, so I had to get suck into that.”
“I’ve never owned a gym membership. I do play sports and I did like yoga and stuff, but I had never lifted weights and It’s part of the character. He’s physically strong, so I started going to the gym all the time, which I’ve actually learned to really enjoy. Like, I do it all the time now for my own sake anyway.”
Listening to a podcast is no substitute for a real law school education, but I think Matt Murdock’s record speaks for itself.
