Netflix is doing its own 'Ghosts' with animated comedy Haunted Hotel, courtesy of Rick and Morty writer

The Matt Roller-created show Haunted Hotel was just announced by Netflix, with an impressive cast featuring Will Forte, Skyler Gisondo, and Jimmi Simpson

Who knew that supernatural sitcoms would be such a hit? Well, the answer to that has already proven to be CBS, who Americanized the popular UK comedy Ghosts. Centered on a young woman who can see and hear the happy haunts in her home, both series have climbed the viewership charts and have garnered a host of loyal fans - with certain Popverse employees among their number. Now, it's Netflix's turn to get into the creepy comedy crawlspace, but not with just another iteration of Ghosts storyline.

No, they're taking their own crack at spiritual satires, and making theirs animated to boot. Let's talk about Haunted Hotel.

As reported by the good folks at Bloody Disgusting, Haunted Hotel springs from the macabre mind of Matt Roller, who made his name in animated comedies working on scifi sensation Rick and Morty. The series will take place in a haunted hotel called the Undervale, which is owned by a struggling single mother. Making the situation slightly better (worse?) is the fact that the woman's brother has recently reentered her life... as one of the hotel's spectral residents.

Joining creator Roller are a host of popular voice actors, including SNL alum Will Forte in a leading role, Happy Endings' Eliza Coupe, Powerpuff Girls' vet Natalie Palamides, and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia/Westworld star Jimmi Simpson.

Rounding out the cast is none other than Skyler Gisondo, who not only just finished a stint on HBO's blessedly raunchy The Righteous Gemstones, but will soar into the hearts of DCU fans as Jimmy Olsen in this summer's Superman. Hopefully, this level of talent means we get to see Roller's vision realized, and maybe even see a few more production studios take a chance on comedies with a dark side.

After all, no matter how many supernatural animated comedies fill the proverbial lodge that is pop culture, there'll never quite be a 'no vacancy' sign out front.

Haunted Hotel creeps its way onto Netflix September 19.
