The Landman cast prepares by working on an oil rig.
Landman is a Paramount+ drama about life as a roughneck in Texas. The show is based on Boomtown, Christian Wallace’ narrative podcast about the Texas oil industry. When it was time to adapt the podcast into a television series, Wallace wanted things to be authentic. To accomplish this, he had the cast learn what it was truly like to be a roughneck.
“We did a roughneck camp,” showrunner Christian Wallace says during a panel at ATX TV Festival. “You know, like in Yellowstone they do a cowboy camp, well instead of horses we have pump jacks. Jacob [Lofland] and our other guys who play rough necks in the show worked alongside real rough necks on real drilling rigs. We had Emilio [Rivera] running the rig at one point.”
“There were so many things I kept looking over at Paramount safety and being like, ‘Are they going to let us do that? Are they going to let him get up there.’ Sure enough, it was safe. We took it very seriously. But they really were doing the work right out there.”
Landman is currently streaming on Paramount+.
