Major spoilers for Peacemaker Season 2 follow.
Peacemaker Season 2 isn't over just yet, but speculation over one of the series' biggest possibilities is. You'll probably recall James Gunn teasing a major DCU cameo in the John Cena-starring show, and Popverse's speculation that that could be David Corenswet's Superman.
Well, it wasn't.
The big cameo that Gunn appears to have been talking about appeared in Peacemaker season 2, episode 6 (the episode titled 'Ignorance is Chris'), and was none other than a very sweary Lex Luthor, AKA Nicholas Hoult. Of course, Luthor's inclusion doesn't automatically rule out his arch-nemesis showing up, but Gunn himself went on record right after the episode aired to clarified that DC Comics' flagship hero wasn't joining alongside one of its biggest villains. And by all accounts, the DCU's Clark Kent was kind of upset by that.
"David was very upset that Nick got to be on the show, and he didn’t," Gunn told Variety in an interview published September 26, "It just didn’t work. I needed Lex in the show to serve a specific purpose. And actually, what Lex and Rick Flag are up to affects very much what happens in an aspect of Man of Tomorrow. So all of that is connected. But this relationship between Rick Flag and Lex Luthor is a potentially negative thing for Superman and all meta-humans."
OK, so we know that Superman won't be on Peacemaker, which is a bummer. But Gunn's comment here is pretty interesting as to what it could mean for the future of the DCU. That said, if we are trying to do a little crystal-ball-gazing from Peacemaker's s2e6, the place we shouldn't look, says Gunn, is in the season-defining twist: that is, that the "perfect" world Cena's Chris Smith discovered is actually one where Nazis won WWII.
"It’s not a major part of the storytelling [of the larger DCU story]," Gunn told Variety. "That’s about Peacemaker."
Well it's a little hurtful to describe Peacemaker's situation as not "major," James, but we take your meaning - the Nazified Earth 2 we see in Peacemaker season 2 probably won't come back into the DCU in a big way anytime soon.
