How do you keep a relationship alive after 87 years? It helps to have different actors put a new spin on your relationship over the years. Just ask Lois Lane and Clark Kent. Many actors have put their own spin on the super-couple, such as George Reeves and Phyllis Coates on Adventures of Superman, or David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan in James Gunn’s Superman. Tom Welling and Erica Durance, who played the couple on the television drama Smallville, are remembered for the passion they brought to the pair. While Smallville ended in 2011, Welling and Durance still hold a special place in their hearts for Clark and Lois.
“I always felt like Clark really adored Lois for who she was,” Welling says during a Smallville reunion panel at Fan Expo Cleveland 2025. “I think he really enjoyed her. Even when it’s quirky and all these other things, she was like a bright light in the room all the time. Even in the beginning, one of the best things that I like about when Lois came on was Clark could actually show some humor, and the banter that we had.”
Welling believes the producers were wise in taking their time with bringing Lois and Clark together. He feels it allowed the couple to grow as friends, making their inevitable romance more believable.
“I thought it worked really well,” Welling continues. “They did a good job of the slow burn for the characters getting together. I think they knew that everybody watching knows that they’re going to get together. The fact that we weren’t together at the beginning I think was refreshing.”
“We were happy about that too,” Erica Durance adds. “We didn’t want to go too close to the ledge of finding that, so they would find all these different mechanisms with which they could tease it a little bit or foreshadow it a little bit. I really feel like they did a good job when they brought in every single character to be a reflection and to allow Clark to reflect something different of his aspect of his personality. And so, when Lois came in, she challenged him in different ways that other people didn’t. I just think that it was such great fun to play.”
Just one of the many reasons Tom Welling and Erica Durance’s Lois and Clark are one of the greatest fictional couples in superhero television.
