Supergirl actor Laura Vandervoort says her personal Kryptonite was her “Britney Spears” outfits on Smallville

Laura Vandervoort wishes she had spoken up about some of Supergirl’s outfits on Smallville

What’s Supergirl’s greatest weakness? According to Laura Vandervoort, it’s skimpy outfits. The actress, who played Kara Zor-El on the superhero drama Smallville, was recently asked if there was anything about her time on the series she wished she could change.

“My Kryptonite was the outfits that I had to wear,” Vandervoort says during a panel at Fan Expo Dallas.

“I think on Smallville, especially at the time, some of the outfits they put us in were Britney Spears inspired and that just wasn’t what a superhero would normally wear to get things done. I was young and wore what I was told to wear, but I look back now, and I just wish I had said something that would make me more comfortable.”

Vandervoort played Kara Zor-El in Smallville season seven and selected guest appearances throughout the rest of the run. Smallville season seven aired in 2007-2008 at a time when primetime television was filled with blondes wearing tube tops and exposing their belly buttons. Promotional material featuring Vandervoort frequently put her in outfits like that.

Vandervoort has previously spoken about her time on the show, where she said Supergirl was underutilized and wasted by the writers. However, the actress believes the upcoming DC Studios film starring Milly Alcock will redeem the character.

Supergirl hits theaters on June 26, 2026. I doubt she’ll be wearing a Britney Spears ensemble this time around.
