The Mandalorian stole Obi-Wan Kenobi's thunder as the big Star Wars splash for Disney+, says Ewan McGregor
Although The Mandalorian has been promoted to the big screen, McGregor is still demanding a second season of his Disney+ TV series: "Somebody give me a job," he joked

Lucasfilm brought back Obi-Wan Kenobi for a Disney+ series because the Jedi Master's popularity ensured a hit for the newly launched streamer - but The Mandalorian's immediate runaway success stole some of its thunder... according to Ewan McGregor, at least.
"They brought out Disney+ and they wanted a big splash, and I thought that's what we were going to be and then just before we made it, the Mandalorian came out," McGregor said at Fan Expo Chicago 2025. "I thought, 'Wait a minute, I thought we were supposed to be the big splash.' I thought, 'Wait a minute, what's this, what's this going on here?' But there would seem to be plenty of room for all of us."
Released in 2022 - more than two years after Disney+ debuted - the six-episode Obi-Wan Kenobi limited series followed the Jedi Master as he comes out of hiring to rescue Princess Leia from the Empire, bringing him into conflict with his former protege Darth Vader, and a past he feels guilty about.
McGregor fought his first fight scene against Darth Vader in the series and remembers being terrified when he saw Vader coming toward him in the mask, with his lifeless eyes. "It just shot fear through me to my core. It was like I was 5 again," he told the audience at Fan Expo.
The actor isn't done with a galaxy far far away just yet, judging by his appearance at the panel. McGregor asked Disney+ for a new season, saying he hadn't filmed any new projects since last spring. He has however been shooting his Long Way Home motorcycle travelogue series on Apple+, recently appeared in a play in London, and will soon appear with Anne Hathaway in Flowervale Street, a science fiction film Warner Brothers will release next year.
"Somebody give me a job. Come on Disney," he joked. "We need season 2 for goodness sakes. What are we waiting for?"
Obi-Wan Kenobi is streaming on Disney+.
