Ted Lasso season 4 almost looked very different (and broke the show’s central conceit)

The latest season of Apple TV's feel-good sports comedy Ted Lasso is just around the corner, with a chapter that gets its titular, mustachioed coach back to the UK. You'll recall that at the end of season 3, Jason Sudeikis's Lasso was back the States to coach a little league soccer team, but here's what's really interesting - if the show's creatives went with their original idea, he would've stayed there.
This revelation comes via an interview that Sudeikis himself did with the Radio Times, in which he wound the clocks back to the planning stages of the upcoming season 4.
"[In] the early, early stages," said the star, "We had a couple ideas of maybe coaching over here in the States. To keep Rebecca [Welton, played by Hannah Waddingham] and the Richmond family in the mix, maybe she bought a team over here, maybe a women's team over here."
Pausing here to say that this idea wouldn't just radically have changed what Ted Lasso's season 4 is now promising, but it would've essentially flipped the show's concept on its head. Remember, Ted Lasso has always been a 'fish out of water' kind of story - you'll recall the pilot episode line when Lasso himself admits "You can fill two internets with what I don't know about soccer." Putting Lasso back on his home terf, even if it was technically for a soccer team and not an American football league, would've been a complete 180.
"But then the natural thing," Sudeikis continued, "Just felt like… just locking into the women's team and then accepting the premise that 'No, he's going to go back.'"
Ted Lasso season 4 debuts on Apple TV August 5. And who knows - maybe if the show keeps doing as well as it has been, we'll see America's Coach coaching back in America one day.
