The Walking Dead producer Scott M. Gimple can imagine more spinoffs for the AMC zombie franchise into 2040 and beyond

Gimple, who has been with The Walking Dead since 2011, sees the AMC franchise as some sort of... undying thing? Entity that won't stop? Argh, I can't think of a good metaphor

It takes a long time to get through a zombie apocalypse - Scott M. Gimple oughtta know. The writer has served as showrunner, producer, and supervisor of AMC's The Walking Dead franchise at various points over its 15 years on the air, most recently acting as executive producer on The Ones Who Live. It's a long time to be with the zombie franchise, but according to Gimple himself, there's still plenty of franchise left for him to be a part of.

Speaking to SFX Magazine (in an interview published by GamesRadar), Gimple shared his belief that The Walking Dead franchise could continue for another 15 years, and potentially even beyond.

"I do see that potential," Gimple tells SFX, "The Walking Dead is about compelling characters in an unforgiving world, but one that is not without hope. [...] Because the stakes are so high, the choices these characters make define them and change them, one way or another. That's the stuff of a great story. And the scariness, the action, the emotion, the discovery… That can go on and on, as long as we have some terrific characters."

Which characters the future of The Walking Dead would focus on, Gimple doesn't say, but at the very least, there's more than one.

"There are characters from every Walking Dead series that I would love to tell stories with again, some picking up from the last time we saw them, maybe seeing some after a lot of time has passed."

On subject of why these characters are so easy to return to, Gimple points back to the man that started it all. "Robert Kirkman created indelible, addictive characters," he concludes, "And we've always just tried to keep pace with him."

Bear in mind - this quote is absolutely not a confirmation that The Walking Dead franchise will continue to be renewed by AMC, however, it is an interesting window into what that possible future would hold. That is, a continued focus on characters we've already met, spinning off into their own adventures. And at the very least, it's confirmation for longtime viewers of The Walking Dead saga that their favorite post-apocalyptic series still has decades of stories to tell.

Hell, maybe we'll someday even get that musical episode.

The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2 airs new episodes Sunday nights on AMC.
