The late Ultimate Warrior was a lot of things in his life... some good, some bad. But as a moth? I never knew it could be this good.
Horror artist/sculptor VELIKAN has designed a pair of sofubi-style figures for a new line with Wandering Planet Toys called Cryptid Combat!. Mixing classic horror, cryptids, and pro wrestling, the first two 5-inch soft vinyl art toys out of the gate are Cthuluchador and The Ultimoth Warrior.
“I grew up in the late ‘80s and merged my youthful interest in WWE with my later interests of H.P. Lovecraft and cryptids," VELIKAN says in the announcement. “I was lucky enough that Wandering Planet had the same interest in such things!"
VELIKAN hand-sculpts his designs out of Super Sculpey, and then once he's happy with it, he makes silicone molds which are then used to turn into hard resin. These originals are 7 inches tall to get all those details in there, and then hand-reproduced by some "sofubi masters," as they call it, to turn into what VELIKAN calls "true Art Toys."
According to Wandering Planet Toys co-founder Chris 'Doc' Wyatt, VELIKAN did the sculpts on his own, and once he and his team saw it, they jumped at the chance to be involved.
“Seeing these two mythic titans of horror clash is a weird fiction dream (nightmare?) come true," says Wyatt. "It's as if 1930's pulp fiction slammed into 1980's wrestling culture, and gave rise to Japanese-style vinyl kaiju mutants. It's madness."
Wandering Planet has created three color variations: the Insanity Smackdown, the Mightnight Matchup, and a Fire Versus Ice version that is exclusive to its BackerKit campaign. They have also created limited edition retro-style lunchboxes for Cryptid Combat, with art by VELIKAN.
The release date is to be announced, but the Cryptid Combat BackerKit is up and running now; just leave them your email, and they'll let you know when to get excited.
