The Wheel of Time will no longer be turning on Prime Video, with the Amazon-owned streaming company opting not to renew the show for a fourth season a little over a month after the third ended its run.
The series, based on the fantasy book series by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, debuted on Prime Video in November 2021, having already being renewed by Prime Video for a second season six months earlier. Similarly, the third season renewal came more than a year before the show’s second season premiered in September 2023. The fact that no fourth season announcement had made before the end of the third season was seen by many fans as a worrying sign for the show’s future; now, sadly, that has unfortunately been proven to be the case.
Deadline broke the news of the cancellation, noting that Prime Video made the decision “following lengthy deliberations,” and that “the reasons were financial as the series is liked creatively by the streamer’s executives.”
They weren’t the only ones; the show was a critical success, with many applauding the show’s queerness, which was an intentional choice on behalf of its creators. While Prime Video doesn’t release audience numbers, it’s likely that, while fans were vocal about their love of the show, they weren’t numerous enough to keep it alive in the long run. According to Nielsen estimates, the U.S. audience for the show had shrunk during the third season, although there was a bump back up for the April 17 finale — which has now become a series finale, rather than simply a season finale.
The Wheel of Time, which starred Rosalind Pike, Daniel Henney, Zoë Robins, and Josh Stradowski, remains available to stream on Prime Video. Could its fanbase mount a successful renewal effort by binge watching the show all over again in vast quantities…? Stranger things have happened
