Somehow, the Witch Hat Atelier anime was worth the wait [Popverse Jump]

Four years and long delays only meant the animators of Witch Hat Atelier could make the anime something truly special.

Waiting is a terrible thing, especially when you aren’t sure the wait will pay off. Since it started serialization in 2016, we’ve all been waiting for the anime of Witch Hat Atelier to become a reality. After years of hope and delays, we’re finally getting to see Coco and Qifrey in action and, thankfully, it was absolutely worth the wait.

Bringing Witch Hat Atelier to life as an anime was an obvious challenge from the start. The manga is known for its beautiful art and for its celebration not just of magic but of the relationships between people. It is simultaneously big and bold and colorful as well as quiet and intimate. The balance between these two sides is part of what makes Witch Hat Atelier one of the most popular ongoing manga and what makes it a nightmare for any studio to tackle.

Finding that balance took time. Back in 2022, it was announced that the series was getting an anime adaptation. Then, in 2024, it was announced that it had a 2025 release window, which was then delayed a full year to 2026 so that the studio could “present the charm of the project at an even higher quality.” By the time the first episode finally aired in April 2026, fans had been waiting four years to see Coco and Qifrey in action.

Thankfully, it was worth it because Bug Films has created something truly special in the Witch Hat Atelier anime. There is a quiet charm to the early episodes. Even watching Coco cutting fabric feels oddly satisfying. The way it moves. The drag of her charcoal across it. The shears slicing through it. It is difficult to pull off in animation, yet it looks and feels effortless.

And then we get to Episode 5 when Qifrey shows up to save his apprentices from a dragon. If you need any convincing of just how good the animation is in Witch Hat Atelier, the scene above is the one to watch. There is a beautiful fluidity to the motion and a sense of weight to the action that is nearly impossible to pull off. The shift in color and the explosion of energy feel like a magic all their own, which is part of the point.

The thing is that Witch Hat Atelier only really works because the animation is so breathtakingly good. Coco is someone who has not grown up with magic; as the story is told through her eyes, we need to feel the same awe at each spell for the story to truly work. The anime needs to inspire that wonder in us if we are to believe it exists within her. Coco never loses the joy of seeing just what witches are capable of and, therefore, neither can we.

The long delay to the Witch Hat Atelier anime was frustrating because we all knew that it had the potential to be great, but it is clear that it needed that delay to fulfil that potential. It isn’t just about doing justice to Kamome Shirahama’s remarkable artwork and characters; it is about evoking the same emotions that the protagonist is feeling. We need to feel overwhelmed by the power and awed by the beauty of magic for the series to work.

Obviously, no one likes to wait. At the same time, those of us who have watched the One-Punch Man anime know what happens if you don’t give animation staff the time they need to work. For Witch Hat Atelier to work, it needs to be so wondrous and so beautiful that there is no danger of growing bored. Thankfully, the four years of waiting were worth it, as the Witch Hat Atelier anime is a truly remarkable piece of animation that is the most exciting thing I’ve seen in years.
