X-Files star Annabeth Gish wishes the series had more time to flesh out the Doggett and Reyes romance

Annabeth Gish believes the romance between Doggett and Reyes is one of the great untold stories of X-Files

Mulder and Scully weren’t the only power couple on The X-Files. The science fiction drama also included Monica Reyes and John Doggett, two agents with an impeccable amount of chemistry who served as the series' lead characters in the eighth and ninth seasons of the long-running show - and much of that chemistry is owed to the real life friendship between their actors, Robert Patrick and Annabeth Gish.

“It was very organic in real life playing the scenes,” John Doggett actor Robert Patrick shared during an X-Files panel at MegaCon 2026. “I knew Annabeth before, and it was just great to let it unfold and let it happen. And it was easy, you know, it was real easy to do. She’s beautiful.”

Unlike Mulder and Scully, the Reyes and Doggett romance never really got off the ground. While the series hinted that there might be feelings between the two agents, their relationship remained professional.

“That’s sort of an untold storyline that I wish we could have played out a little bit more,” Monica Reyes actress Annabeth Gish agreed. “The budding romance of Doggett and Reyes. Or of Scully and Reyes, you never know. But honestly, Robert, there was always ease. There was always muscle. Like, you wanted to get it right, but there was always ease underneath that. So, it was very easy.”
