Marvel is revamping the X-Men comic book line this summer in a relaunch titled 'From the Ashes' and, as part of it, the historic, original Uncanny X-Men title returns courtesy of writer Gail Simone and artist David Marquez. Due out this August, the duo's Uncanny X-Men series will star Wolverine, Rogue, Gambit, Nightcrawler, and Jubilee - but its much more than just a return to the title's status quo.

During her spotlight panel at WonderCon 2024 attended by Popverse's Jules Chin Greene, Simone described the impending Uncanny X-Men relaunch as a creepy Southern Gothic tale set-up in a new Louisiana base of operations for the team - a rustic old house which Gambit grew up in.

Simone goes on to say that she and Marquez are creating four new young mutants to co-star in the books - each with powers based on what Simone calls "hidden disabilities" - leading to their powers not being obvious like "popping claws," in reference to Wolverine's favorite party trick. (Well, the favorite party trick of both Wolverines, really.)

In announcing Uncanny X-Men earlier this year, Marvel describes the book as "Outlaw heroes once agian, the X-Men embark on a new mission! Making themselves at home in the Big Easy, the X-Men protect a world that hates and fears them! Join ROGUE, GAMBIT, NIGHTCRAWLER, JUBILEE and WOLVERINE on explosive super hero adventures. Uncanny as ever, the X-Men are back to saving the day mutant-style!” Going by what Simone said, it sounds as if things might be even more uncanny than fans first expected.

Uncanny X-Men #1 debuts August 7.
