One of the most innovative parts of Dav Pilkey's Cat Kid Comic Club series is the papercrafting the cartoonist does for the series. Ahead of November 29's Cat Kid Comic Club: Collaborations, Pilkey and his publisher Scholastic have shared with us a behind-the-scenes making of the Cat Kid Comic Club character Frogzilla.

Take a look:

For the uninitiated, Dav Pilkey is arguably the most popular comic creator in modern times. Just how big is he? According to NPD BookScan data for August 2022, he accounts for 12 of the top 20 kids graphic novels being sold - including the top 7 positions - for his Dog Man and Cat Kid Comic Club graphic novel series.

April's Cat Kid Comic Club: On Purpose has been the number-one bestseller for kids graphic novels since its debut earlier this year, and November's Cat Kid Comic Club: Collaborations seems set on repeating that trend.

"Excitement and imagination run wild as Naomi, Melvin, Poppy, Gilbert, Curly, and their siblings get back to making comics with originality and laughter. But wait -- have they cleaned their rooms yet?!" reads Scholastic's description of Cat Kid Comic Club: Collaborations. "After their chores, the rambunctious group presents even more amazing mini-comics: a thrilling ride in 'Chubbs McSpiderbutt,' an action-packed romp in 'Frogzilla,' reflective haikus in 'In the Autumn Pond,' a candy-coated mystery in 'Mallo Cop,' and much, much, more. By working together, the baby frogs discover that small things can have a huge impact."

While Pilkey is best known for his Captain Underpants and Dog Man series, Cat Kid Comic Club shows the writer/artist working in various mediums including origami, acrylic paints, colored pencils, photography, collage, gouache, watercolores, and more.
