Marvel Comics has been "siloing off" the X-Men, Avengers, and Spider-Man, and its 2026 event Armageddon aims to break down those walls

"We’ve got all the toys, we should play with them," reasons Avengers: Armageddon writer Chip Zdarsky about Marvel Comics' upcoming event storyline

If there’s one thing that the success of Avengers: Endgame — and the excitement surrounding the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday — should demonstrate, it’s that fans still love a good old-fashioned Marvel Team-Up. That’s a lesson that’s not been lost on Marvel Comics nor writer Chip Zdarsky, who’s promising that this summer’s Avengers: Armageddon storyline will feature the comic book Marvel Universe coming together in a way that it hasn’t in quite a while.

“There’s some siloing off between, like, X-Men and Avengers and, say, Spider-Man, that I kind of […] want to get around a little bit, and I want these characters to interact more,” Zdarsky revealed during an interview with the Owen Likes Comics podcast. “It’s part of why I’m writing so far ahead. If I write far enough ahead, I can get these things approved before other offices can say, ‘Oh, no. During that time, this is happening.’”

Zdarsky is the core architect behind Armageddon and has already started building the framework for it in his ongoing Captain America comic book series.

Fans have already seen the cover for the Armageddon/X-Men Comics Giveaway Day special issue, which features Wolverine, Iron Man, and Spider-Man fighting the Red Hulk, suggesting the scope of the storyline to come, and Marvel has already announced preludes to the story, including both Captain America and Wolverine, with the latter appearing in the Weapons of Armageddon miniseries. Zdarsky was willing to expand the storyline's roster a little bit, confirming, “Spidey plays a part in Armageddon as well. Because we’ve got all the toys, we should play with them.”

Avengers: Armageddon will begin in June 2026.
