Buffy the Vampire Slayer's new era starts with a "big status quo shift" surprise, but one Redditor seems to have almost solved it

Comics staple Kelly Thompson is doing big things with the Buffy the Vampire Slayer mythos over at Dynamite... and fans are getting worryingly close to figuring out what

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer relaunch over at Hulu might be dead (emphasis on "might"), but that doesn't mean there aren't huge things coming to Sunnydale very soon. As you might know if you keep up with the Buffy comics, an all-new era of sequential slaying is soon to begin over at Dynamite Comics, where Absolute Wonder Woman writer Kelly Thompson will be writing not only the main Buffy title, but also its companion storyline, Angel. But even if you've seen both shows that share those comics' names, don't think for a second you know what she's planning.

Unless, of course, you're one particular online sleuth, who Thompson claims got worryingly close to her biggest twist.

Thompson recently spoke to ScreenRant about what she plans to do with the Buffy mythology, and though she doesn't get into specifics, she confirms that the story will begin with a "big status quo shift" that readers will find in Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1. This "shift" appears to cast all of the Buffy mythos in a new light, so you can understand why Thompson wants to keep it secret.

Apparently, though, that's easier said than done.

"I think our idea is really creative and interesting," Thompson said of the mysterious change, "But I also think that if enough people sat down and compared notes, they could probably figure it out. In fact, I saw one guy on Reddit get dangerously close, and I joked with Nate [Cosby, editor] that we needed to stop doing interviews because this guy was going to solve the whole thing."

Before you ask, reader - no, Thompson did not specify which Redditor got close enough to the truth that she almost pulled the plug on interviews. Believe me, I'm just as disappointed as you.

"It's been a fun little cat-and-mouse game," the legendary Hawkeye writer concluded, "I hate being cagey because I'd much rather just talk openly with people, but I also think that if we can preserve the surprise, even if only until somebody inevitably leaks it the week before publication, readers will enjoy discovering it for themselves."

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is streaming on Hulu now. Thompson's Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 hits shelves August 5, with Angel #1 hitting August 19.
