Absolute Batman is allowing writer Scott Snyder to go beyond what DC Comics allowed him to write in his 'New 52' run

For Absolute Batman writer Scott Snyder, there is "no Source Wall at the end of the universe" containing his and Nick Dragotta's creativity

Absolute Batman has been a triumphant return to DC Comics for writer Scott Snyder. Snyder wrote one of the most beloved series of DC's New 52 era with his and Greg Capullo's run on Batman. And Absolute Batman has a massively different feel than Snyder's New 52 Batman, which is by design.

In an interview with DC's website, Snyder revealed how he has newfound freedom with Absolute Batman that he didn't have while writing the mainline DC Universe's Batman book back during the New 52. “Absolute Batman is able to take a lot of things that I really loved to explore in the main run we did to a much further point and take them to their conclusion. There’s no Source Wall to hit at the end of the universe that way," Snyder said.

In other words, the sky is the limit when it comes to the Absolute Universe. The Robins can be a part of a program spearheaded by Slade Wilson, where they are mech pilots! Part of the fun of the Absolute Universe is that creators like Snyder get to push the envelope. Why shouldn't Batman have a giant battle axe? Let's have fun!

As DC history shows, Batman has excelled both when he's in grounded stories and in more fantastical settings. That's part of the beauty of the character. If you don't believe me, just watch the animated film, Batman: Soul of the Dragon. It's Batman in a 70s-style martial arts film. Absolute Batman has been a smash success because fans are open to big creative swings from Scott Snyder and series artist Nick Dragotta. And this all has us wondering what could be achieved when more creators are given the opportunity to work on a series with "no Source Wall to hit at the end of the universe."

Here's an update to date guide on the Absolute Batman release schedule.
