Oni Press celebrates EC Horror revival with deluxe Epitaphs from the Abyss hardcover and portfolio
Oni Press celebrates two years of EC Comics horror goodness with an oversized collection of Epitaphs from the Abyss - including a special limited edition portfolio of its instant classic covers

It’s been a couple of years since news broke that Oni Press was reviving the classic comic publisher EC Comics with a new line of anthologies and comic books set to continue its tradition of no-holds-barred genre storytelling with an updated twist. This summer, Oni is set to not only mark the success of that revival with some of comics’ top talent — but celebrate one particular creator in particular with a deluxe limited edition hardcover and portfolio of one of its top titles.

July will see the release of the Epitaphs from the Abyss Library Edition in two different formats — a ‘standard’ edition, which undersells what it actually is (an oversized hardcover collecting the twelve-issue anthology series together for the first time), and a slipcase and portfolio edition, which includes the standard hardcore alongside twelve 11” x 7” prints showcasing Joker artist Lee Bermejo’s covers for each issue of the series in what Oni describes as “gallery-ready” reproductions.
It’s a smart choice; while Epitaphs from the Abyss as a whole was a horror anthology filled with creators like Jason Aaron (Thor, Absolute Superman), Charlie Adlard (The Walking Dead), Chris Condon (Ultimate Wolverine), Klaus Janson (Daredevil, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns), and Brian Azzarello (100 Bullets) telling tales that were appropriately chilling, funny, and surprising in the classic EC tradition, Bermejo’s covers for the series were beautiful takes on that formula that looked to the eye-catching, at times controversially so, classic history of EC horror comics and took them in fun (and occasionally gruesome) new directions.
“The dream as an artist has always been for a publisher to let you off your leash with total freedom,” Bermejo said in a statement provided by the publisher. “In my particular version, though, I want the nightmare option where said publisher also wants me to come up with the most demented, disturbing, and terrifying imagery possible. My dream/nightmare came true with EC and Oni.”

He continued, “It was an honor and a privilege to try and creep you out every month and be a small part of one of the greatest legacies in comics… EC Horror.”
The slipcase and portfolio edition of the Epitaphs from the Abyss Library Edition is limited to just 1,000 copies, with pre-orders opening January 31. (Talk to your local comic retailer if you’re interested.) But even the ‘standard’ edition is filled with material that goes above and beyond what was in the series’ initial release, with the hardcover containing more than 50 pages of new ‘behind the scenes’ material including designs and commentary from creators including Jay Stephens and designer Rian Hughes.
Epitaphs from the Abyss Library Edition will be released July 14. Haunt the comic book stories while you wait for your copy to appear.
