How the eating habits of DC's Poison Ivy became a big controversy for writer G. Willow Wilson
Poison Ivy has been portrayed as a vegan and a carnivore, so G. Willow Wilson attempted to reconcile the two

What do Batman’s enemies eat for dinner? It turns out the question is more controversial than you may think.
When G. Willow Wilson began writing Poison Ivy, she noted that the longtime character had an inconsistent diet, with some books portraying her as a vegan, and others as a carnivore. Wilson attempted to untangle the discrepancy, but some readers pushed back.
“On the HBO animated side of the DC Universe, Poison Ivy is a carnivore,” Wilson said during a panel at Tampa Bay Comic Convention. “She identifies as a plant, she can feel what plants are feeling, like when a tree is cut down, she feels it. So, to her, eating plants would be a form of cannibalism, and she would feel it. So, they very recently made her a carnivore.”
“If you go further in the books, when she was sort of an Earth mom or hippie, she’s a vegan with the sort of idea that she doesn’t want to contribute to the destruction of the Earth. It’s a more holistic way of thinking,” Wilson continued.
“I tried to resolve this very serious issue in the book by making her have a mild case of orthorexia, where she kind of runs everything through a, you know, ‘What is the carbon output, and what is the influence of this, that or the other.’ So, she eats both plants and meats, but she has strong opinions about pretty much everything.”
Wilson soon found herself under fire from multiple sides of the fandom.
“I got it from both ends. The ones who are like, ‘The canon is the books from the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s where she is vegan.’ And the ones who are like, ‘This is ridiculous. It’s very clear in the ongoing Harley Quinn series that she’s a carnivore.’ And I’m like, you can all fight with each other. Don’t blame me. I’m just trying to make sense of all this.”
If you thought it was hard to pick out your own dinner, just imagine what it’s like to pick out one for a fictional character.
