IDW Publishing is killing Godzilla in 2026, and they're bringing in the man who killed Superman to help

Godzilla will die in 2026 (but not for long)

Say it ain’t so — just six issues into its current ongoing comic book series, IDW Publishing is killing off Godzilla, King of the Monsters. And they’re bringing in a man with some experience killing pop culture icons to make it happen, with Dan Jurgens, the man behind 1992’s The Death of Superman, providing a cover for the fateful issue.

Jurgens and inker Brett Breeding — who inked Jurgens in the fateful Superman #75, which killed off the Man of Steel for a handful of months and prompted a buying frenzy three decades earlier — are providing a special variant cover for IDW’s Godzilla #6, paying tribute to their own Superman work of the past. Take a look at it below:

“When the good folks at IDW asked about the possibility of a special 'Death of Godzilla' cover that would play off the iconic cover that Brett Breeding and I did for Superman #75, I was definitely up for it,” Jurgens said in a statement provided by the publisher. ”I’ve always been a fan of the big guy but hadn’t had a chance to draw him so this was the perfect way to scratch that itch. It was great fun to be able to contribute!”

Of course, you really can’t keep a good kaiju down, and Godzilla’s return is already announced: it’s coming in Godzilla #7, as Godzilla returns “freed from the constraints of its physical body and unleashed as its most powerful form ever: Kai-Sei Energy Godzilla!”

That name references ‘Kai-Sei,’ a mysterious energy that powers the kaiju in the shared universe setting of IDW’s current Godzilla comics: Godzilla, Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone, and the new Starship Godzilla, which launched October 1, 2025. Of course, that still leaves the question of what a non-physical Kai-Sei Energy Godzilla actually is very much open… at least for a few months.

“Comics should be insane. And personally, I can't think of a more insane way to end arc 1 of the first ongoing Godzilla series in over a decade than KILLING GODZILLA,” ditor Jake Williams said about the plans for the series. “For anyone waiting to check out this series  – now's the time to jump on. We're delivering a Godzilla unlike any other, and finally making good on our promise to showcase 'a boy with the power of Godzilla.'”

Godzilla #6 will be released January 7, 2026, with Godzilla #7 available in February.
