Dog Man heads up Children's Book Week 2025: "Reading is the greatest superpower of all"

Dav Pilkey and Scholastic are donating up to 50,000 books to US locations as part of the November 2025 event to promote child literacy

At a time where it feels like freedom to read is under attack in America (A time when the Librarian of Congress just got fired by the President, for example, or more states are increasing their numbers of banned books, for example), it takes a superhero to stand up for child literacy. Thankfully, Dog Man is leading the charge for Children’s Book Week this November.

Dav Pilkey’s publishing phenomenon — Dog Man titles were both the #1 and #2 best-selling kids’ graphic novels in 2024, with 11 Dog Man titles in the overall Top 20 for the year — will be the anchor for this year’s Children’s Book Week, with Pilkey providing a new poster for the event to be displayed in schools, bookstores, and libraries throughout the November 3-9 period of the event.

Additionally, Pilkey and publisher Scholastic will be donating up to 50,000 books to venues taking part in Children’s Book Week celebrations in community centers throughout the U.S., as part of a ‘Power Up with Reading: Dog Man and Friends Epic Event Kit’ which also includes activity guides, giveaways, and a copy of Pilkey’s CBW poster.

“Reading is the greatest superpower of all and I’m grateful to all the teachers, librarians, and independent booksellers who are doing good in their communities—they are the ultimate superheroes,” Pilkey said in a statement.

Scholastic Trade president Ellie Berger added, “For over three decades of publishing Dav Pilkey’s books, we have seen firsthand Dav’s personal commitment to giving back and supporting kids and communities in need. His books continue to inspire, influence, and ignite a love of reading among boys and girls. We couldn’t be more excited to collaborate on this exciting literacy initiative that will help create even more readers.”

The Dog Man Children’s Book Week celebrations come just days before the release of the fourteenth book in the series, Dog Man: Big Jim Believes, due in stores November 11 internationally. According to Scholastic, the series has sold upwards of 70 million copies worldwide since launching in 2016, and sales in 2025 are up 34% compared with the same period last year. In other words, Dog Man isn’t going away anytime soon… and hopefully, his success will bring more success to Children’s Book Week, starting November 3, 2025.

How to read the Dog Man books in order (yes, including Cat Kid Comic Club).
