When you’re in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, it’s good to have friends. Unfortunately, Maggie and Negan have one another instead. The two have a complicated history, mostly because Negan killed Maggie’s husband Glenn on The Walking Dead. If Maggie had her way, she would’ve killed Negan a long time ago, but the two have been forced to work together to survive on the spinoff The Walking Dead: Dead City.

Maggie would love nothing more than to be as far away from Negan as possible, and it turns out, she almost got her wish. When AMC was ending The Walking Dead, there were talks of putting Negan and Maggie in separate spinoffs, until the ideas were combined.

According to Negan actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan, the concept began during the final days of The Walking Dead, as Negan and Maggie (Lauren Cohen) were being positioned as the new leads. “Originally it was [Norman Reedus] was going to do his show, and then [Lauren Cohen] and I were called by [AMC programming president Dan McDermott] maybe, and [showrunner Scott Gimple], and they were like, we’re going to have you and Lauren take over the main franchise. You’ll be the heads of the new franchise and we weren’t splitting off,” Jeffrey Dean Morgan told Josh Horowitz during an episode of Happy Sad Confused.

“Suddenly Walking Dead was cancelled by AMC. But in the same sentence as that was, we’d like you to do your own show. And they had kind of said the same thing to Lauren as well. They were looking at different ways to do different spinoffs. And then they came to us with this idea of pairing the two of us together, which at first I laughed. There’s no fricking way,” Morgan remembered. “How would that even work? And I think that was kind of the main thing. And I think that was the whole point. We don’t know yet, but we find it a very interesting way to start a show where your two leads kind of hate each other.”

The Walking Dead: Dead City recently finished its third season, so it appears the idea had some legs. As of this writing AMC has not announced a fourth season for Dead City, but it’s clear that there are still more stories to tell with Negan and Maggie.
