As any seasoned Marvel Comics reader can tell you, there seems to be a universe-shaking event every year in superhero comics. Some, like Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman's King in Black, spin out of stories simmering for years in a particular character's ongoing series, while others clearly bear the marks of company synergy with the MCU. As it turns out, the blockbuster event of the summer, Avengers: Armageddon, written by Chip Zdarsky, isn't like your typical event comic from the Big Two.
In an interview with SKTCHD, Chip Zdarsky revealed how Avengers: Armageddon organically spun out into its own event. "[Armageddon] is a case where it is its own thing. It wasn’t in Captain America, and I pulled it out to turn it into this. This is like writing Captain America and realizing that this could spring something out over here that’s bigger. So, we just went ahead and did that. But yeah, it’s weird and fun to come back to Marvel with Captain America, which is not normally a top-selling title. And then kind of quickly present story ideas that build off it that become bigger, and then Marvel just kind of trusts me with taking that forward," Zdarsky said.
It's refreshing to have an event built by a writer like Zdarsky, who isn't writing a marquee title at Marvel like The Amazing Spider-Man or Uncanny X-Men. And I think there's something to be said for an event that's simply a good story that is worth standing on its own two legs. Obviously, a story like King in Black absolutely rocked because it felt like the climax of Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman's Venom run. But if a creator like Zdarsky has an idea for a story that's worth giving the event treatment, then let's have at it.
Avengers: Armageddon #1 hits comics shops on June 3.
