The Green Arrow story DC would've killed a decade ago is now one of its biggest Absolute successes

The Absolute Green Arrow series was going to end with a big reveal of the mystery murderer... but now the creators are going to be able to tell what happens next.

Popverse's coverage of Comic-Con International: San Diego 2026 is brought to you by Dark Horse Comics.

DC launched Absolute Green Arrow as a six-issue series dealing with a mystery of a billionaire serial killer who started by killing the person who in the standard DCU is the Green Arrow, himself. Writer Pornsack Pichetshote and artist Rafael Albuquerque knew they only had six issues for their story, so were building up to end with a big reveal of who the mystery killer is and could only hope someday the story could be continued.

After readers bought Absolute Green Arrow in droves and overtook DC's internal projections for what sales could, the time to tell the story after Absolute Green Arrow #6 (of 6) became... well, right after.

“We’re presenting a bunch of toys for DC to play with, but we had ideas for how we wanted to keep playing with them,” says Pichetshote during the packed DC Absolute Universe panel at Comic-Con International: San Diego. "You’ll find out who the Green Arrow is in issue #6, and you’ll go on a whole new mystery thriller [in issues 7 through 12."

Before Pichetshote became a published author, he actually worked inside the halls of DC as a comics editor and in their film/TV side. When he had the chance to pitch what became Absolute Green Arrow, he was encouraged to think outside the box.. so with a bit of trust, he pitched something that honestly the DC he knew of in the '10s would never approve. But the DC of the 2020s did.

“Literally the entire concept of Green Arrow, I cannot believe you guys greenlit [it]," Pichetshote says to Absolute DC group editor Katie Kubert during the panel. And that attitude of pushing the envelope didn't stop with the pitch, it's actually continuing because DC said 'yes,' and then fans said 'yes' even louder.

August's Absolute Green Arrow #4 is described by the writer as "the most intense issue yet" due to that kind of backstage back-and-forth he had about this issue with Kubert, and Albuquerque.

Absolute Green Arrow #4 (of 12) goes on sale on August 19.
