Steve Ditko might be one of the most influential figures in pop culture, yet the man himself remains an enigma. Steve Ditko co-created Spider-Man and many of his supporting characters, designed Iron Man’s traditional red and yellow armor, created the Question, and made countless contributions to the world of comic books.

However, Ditko, who passed away in 2018, spent most of his life away from the spotlight. He regularly turned down interview requests and public appearances, preferring to let his artwork speak for itself. However, that doesn’t mean his contemporaries, like writer Gerry Conway, don’t have their fair share of stories about him.

“I worked with Steve Ditko once on Man-Bat,” Gerry Conway says during a panel at San Diego Comic Con 2013. “At the time that I worked with him, he was a gentle, friendly sort of guy in a kind of withdrawn sort of way. He did remind me a lot of the Question, though. I mean, he had that kind of black-and-white view of life. And he did not suffer fools gladly. If he agreed with you, you’re fine. If he didn’t, he just would shut you off.”
